App Store Screenshot Guidelines
Everything you need to know about Apple's screenshot requirements for 2026. Sizes, formats, content rules, and what gets rejected.
Screenshot Size Requirements
Apple requires screenshots at specific pixel dimensions for each device class. The most important size is 1290 x 2796 pixels for the iPhone 6.7-inch display class (iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro). This is the primary screenshot that appears in App Store search results.
For universal apps (iPhone + iPad), you also need iPad screenshots at 2048 x 2732 (12.9-inch) and optionally 1668 x 2388 (10.9-inch). Apple Watch apps need their own screenshots at 410 x 502 for Series 10.
You can upload between 1 and 10 screenshots per device class. Apple recommends at least 3 for the best presentation in search results. The first 3 screenshots are visible without scrolling on the product page.
File Format and Quality
Screenshots must be PNG or JPEG format with no transparency. The recommended format is PNG for the sharpest text and UI elements. JPEG is acceptable but may show compression artifacts on retina displays.
There is no specific file size limit, but keeping screenshots under 5MB ensures fast upload times. Apple's asset validation will reject images that don't match the exact pixel dimensions for each device class.
Color space should be sRGB. Do not use P3 or CMYK color spaces for screenshots — they may display incorrectly on some devices.
Content Rules and Review Guidelines
Apple has strict rules about what can appear in screenshots. Your screenshots must accurately represent the current version of your app. Do not show features that aren't available yet or that require in-app purchases without disclosure.
Screenshots cannot contain pricing information that might become inaccurate. Avoid showing specific prices, discount percentages, or promotional offers in your screenshots.
Do not include iPhone or iPad device frames that don't match current Apple hardware. Using outdated device frames (like an iPhone with a home button when your screenshot is 1290 x 2796) will confuse users and may lead to rejection.
Text overlays should be in the language matching the localization. If your screenshots are for the US English store, all text must be in English.
Screenshot Ordering Strategy
The order of your screenshots matters significantly for conversion. The first screenshot should communicate your app's primary value proposition — the main reason someone would download it.
Screenshot 2-3 should cover your most compelling secondary features. Screenshots 4-10 can cover additional features, use cases, or social proof. Many users only see the first 3 screenshots, so front-load your best content.
Consider using a panoramic screenshot layout where consecutive screenshots form a continuous scene. This creates visual flow and encourages users to scroll through all screenshots.
Localization Requirements
If your app is available in multiple countries, you should localize your screenshots for each market. At minimum, localize the text overlays. Ideally, also show localized app content.
Apple supports up to 40 localizations. You don't need unique screenshots for every locale — you can use the same screenshots for multiple English-speaking markets, for example. But major markets (US, UK, Japan, Germany, France, China, Korea) benefit significantly from localized screenshots.
Translation quality matters. Poor translations in screenshots create a negative first impression. Use native speakers or professional translation services rather than machine translation for screenshot text.
